Do I need to notify DVLA if I sell my car?

How long do you have to tell DVLA that you sold your car?

You should tell the DVLA as soon as possible that you have sold your car, ideally on the day of the sale. If you don’t do this you could be in line for a hefty fine.  

How do I notify the DVLA that I am a new keeper?

It's easy! All you need to do is complete the relevant New Keeper section of the V5C registration certificate (log book) and send it off to the DVLA. You should get a reply confirming your status as the new owner within the month.

What happens if I don't tell the DVLA I've sold my car?

If you don't tell the DVLA that you’ve sold your car, you could still be liable for road tax, parking fines, speeding tickets and other charges. You could also be fined up to £1,000. 

What if I want to keep my registration plate?

If you want to keep your registration plate when selling your car, you'll need to apply to the DVLA for a retention certificate first, before you sell. This certificate will allow you to keep the registration number and transfer it over to a new vehicle in the future. You'll also need to include the certificate with the V5C registration document when you sell the car.

If you sell your car to a motor trader they will usually take care of notifying the DVLA themselves. However, it's always a good idea to check with them first, just to make sure.
